Reverse Speech Analysis By Eve Frances Lorgen, M. A.The polygraph lie detector test may soon become a thing of the past. With the advent and growing popularity of Reverse Speech Analysis, truth detection can now become more readily available. In Ufology and especially in the arena of Alien Abductions, truth is subjective. Facts are hard to come by. Deception and confusion is rampant. Has the ultimate UFO investigator's tool finally arrived? Could it be the Messiah of truth detecting technology? Or is Reverse Speech just another pseudoscience used to promote one's own business idea, belief system or personal projections? These are questions I raised while researching the use of reverse speech as an investigative and therapeutic tool for UFO experiencers and abductees. The things I really wanted to know as an abductions researcher are the facts behind one's memories of alien encounters, piercing through screen memories and even spiritual truths and absolutes, if such a thing exists. For over a year, I've been corresponding with a reverse speech analyst named Pat Mason. We have recorded numerous conversations of abductees, public persons in the UFO field and other individuals in search for deeper truths to the whole UFO abduction phenomena. Pat Mason has been doing reverse speech analysis for over a year, using a recording system connected to a sound editing computer program to analyze reverse speech patterns. (See "How To Create A Sound File On Your Computer For Reverse Analysis".) David OatesI had the opportunity to interview David Oates, the Australian born, founder and developer of Reverse Speech Enterprises, Inc., for a more thorough look at his truth detecting discovery. Mr. Oates pioneering efforts began fifteen years ago when he was inspired to rewire a tape recorder so he could hear the backwards messages masked within certain rock and roll music. Much to his surprise, he could hear the masked messages and from that time on, Mr. Oates became obsessed with finding the encoded phrases within reverse speech. In 1987, Mr. Oates proposed his theory that language is bi-level; forwards and backwards. Forwards speech functions as the conscious spoken communication and reverse speech revealing unconscious thoughts, desires and motivations. It is a natural function of the mind and is part of what extrasensory perception is all about. Scientific Testing of Reverse SpeechAlthough the scientific research to date is still in its infancy, Mr. Oates is confident that reverse speech will prove to be one of the most significant discoveries in the history of the human race. "If we get a gut feeling or sense of what something is all about, we can trace this back to reverse speech." Mr. Oates asserts. "There are whole conversations going on backwards all the time." Mr. Oates believes that some tests conducted on reverse speech prove that the human brain receives and responds to reversals in a communicative fashion. "Electroencephalograph (EEG) tests have been done on persons listening to prerecorded sound tracks of normal speech, without telling the listener where the reversals were previously found. The EEG showed that the brain was stimulated in the parts of the brain that we were addressing when the reversals were played. And the tests showed rapid activity between the right and left hemisphere of the brain the moment the reversals started until it ended." Mr. Oates stated. It has been argued by skeptics that reverse speech is nothing more than the projection of one's thoughts into senseless gibberish, mere autosuggestion. In defense of such arguments, Mr. Oates conducted blind tests whereby a group of thirty individuals were played reversals on a sound track. The group was divided into three sections: Group one was told what the reversal was and asked "Can you hear that?" Group two was told a false message that was not present and was asked, "Can you hear that?" Group three was told nothing and asked, "What do you hear?" The results from group one had an 80 percent recognition, group two less than 10 percent, and group three there was at least 50 percent recognition and even higher than 50 percent for those who were more trained in reverse speech. Furthermore, when several person's read the same paragraph, for example, about their mother, the tests showed that different reversals were found for each person. The content of the reversals indicated how the person felt or thought about their mother. Contrary to what one may assume, the reversals are not derived from the words themselves, but rather from the tones of speech. Personal Witness to Reverse SpeechBeing naturally inquisitive about this truth detecting breakthrough, I decided to play some of my own phrases and even poetry backwards. To my amazement, on my first attempts at listening to speech backwards, I actually heard some reversals quite clearly! Mr. Oates was right when he said reverse speech phrases sound different, more melodious and sing-song than normal speech. Most reversals, according to Oates, are found in the high tones of speech. One of the more unique aspects of reverse speech is that the greater the emotional content of the communication, the more clear and frequent the reversals will be. Conversely, in a well rehearsed speech or communication from a highly left brained person, the reversals will drop off in frequency. Reverse speech messages generally come out in the language the person is speaking in, unless they are thinking in another language. If someone is bilingual and thinks in two languages, then the reversals will reflect that. Mr. Oates said, "I once had a German student who spoke poor English and most of her reversals were in German. As she learned English more fluently, her reversals started to shift to English." Detection of Repressed Traumatic MemoriesDavid Oates assures us, "Reverse speech reflects what the person is thinking and is the most incredible truth detector ever because it reveals the true, uncensored, unadulterated thoughts of the individual." Considering this, I went one step further and asked Mr. Oates if reverse speech can reveal hidden and suppressed memories. "I've done reversals on a woman who was molested as a child, yet had no conscious memory of the event. In her reversals she made graphic descriptions of the perpetrator. I've had people reveal names of relatives, bank accounts, hidden agendas and behaviors that were later confirmed by the individual." Mr. Oates explained. "If something is true, the reversal will give accurate direct information confirming it. If it is a lie, the reverse speech will flat out, say its a lie or give motives why the person is lying, like money or self importance." Detection of LiesI can attest to the fact that I have found this to be true. I recorded a conversation with an individual, deliberately telling a lie. I had the tape analyzed by Pat Mason, who did not even know I lied or know where the reversal should be found. Sure enough, in the paragraph where I lied, my reversal showed that I lied! This convinced me that reverse speech can reveal if someone is consciously lying. But I still had questions in the event that someone believes a lie, false or screen memory, and if reverse speech will reflect that. David stated that in the event that someone is delusional or believes a fantasy to be true, then the reversals will tend to come out in deep metaphors like, "Lancelot is wounded," "goddess," "stuck in the spear," and "sword," for example. In such cases, it takes a well trained reverse speech analyst to be able to decipher between truth and fantasy. Also, one needs at least five to six reversals of the same person to get an idea of the content of what they are communciating unconsciously. I went on to tell Mr. Oates that in some UFO and alien encounters, the person may be given a screen memory or even several levels of screen memories to cover up the abduction. David admitted that he hadn't worked with a large enough number of abductees to make any definite conclusions on that aspect. But he did say that he believes the phenomena of alien visitation is basically a spiritual phenomena. David Oates' UFO SightingDavid went on to describe his recent UFO sighting in mid December, 1997 in his home town of Fallbrook, California. "I live on top of a hill and have a great view of the ocean. My kids were out in the jacuzzi around dusk. They came running inside to tell me of a big UFO outside. I didn't believe them at first. It was massive, high, just over the mountain top, several miles across. It was brilliant gold and yellow and looked like two saucers on top of each other with a corridor or column in the center connecting the two. It slowly moved over the mountain peak. We were watching it for at least thirty minutes. It was in no hurry, just crawling along." As far as David knows, no one else reported the sighting. I asked David if this first UFO sighting of his had any syncronistic meaning for him. " If anything," David said, "is that reverse speech is about to go through a major crux in evolution. We're reaching a fairly good public acceptance. It's huge - the birth of reverse speech." On David Oates web site (David's UFO Tape) he describes his UFO experience from a tape recording and the resulting reverse messages, some of which still remain a mystery. (See reversals below.) I also tape recorded our interview and had Pat Mason reverse it to see if any messages were communicated. Most of the reversals alluded to spiritual themes and the topic of our conversation.(See reversals below.) What I really wanted to do is to get David to listen to the specific sound bites where Pat's reversals were found and tell me what he hears, to see if he would hear the same messages. Unfortunately, David did not respond to my request, but finally did admit that the reversals that Pat Mason was getting in her work (we showed David many reversals from previous work) is very much the same as what other reverse speech analysts were finding.
Reverse Speech Training and Understanding MetaphorsThe trouble with reverse speech is that if one doesn't have adequate training or knowledge of how it works, then one can end up with erroneous and false projections. It takes at least six months practice at fifteen hours a week on a consistent basis to become proficient. In addition to the phonetic aspect, one needs a good understanding of metaphors and the levels of communication that the reversals reflect. The metaphorical aspect of reverse speech suggests that the mind is thinking in pictures, symbols and archetypes much like in dreams. In the deep unconscious there are prime metaphors. At the base of the structure of the psyche, all of human behavior, thought and emotion is instigated. Metaphors have a life of their own. They are living entities in and of themselves, like Jungian archetypes. The metaphors create behavior. The way they interact with each other depends on the behavior created. These are called structural or archetypal metaphors. Operational metaphors are how the archetype operates. They describe how behavior plays itself out. Suppose there is someone whose reverse speech has three structural metaphors that say wolf, goddess and Satan. The wolf is a hunter and protector. Satan is aggressive and angry. Goddess is hope for the future. If wolf and goddess work together they will have a behavior of love and compassion. If wolf and Satan are together then aggression and anger is the behavioral pattern. There are great similarities between reverse speech and Jungian archetypes. Some metaphors are unique to the individual much like in dream symbology. The nice thing about reverse speech is that there is a reference point in the forwards speech to confirm much of the meaning. This is what is described as complimentarity. The reverse messages usually related to the same topic or theme as the forwards speech and will include the unconscious thoughts going on at the time. Mr. Oates claims that the structural or archetypal metaphors always communicate the truth. Even if a person believes they are lying, the structural metaphor will not support that lie. An incongruity will represent that. Levels of CommunicationThere are three levels of reverse speech communication: conscious thoughts and those just below the surface of consciousness, the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious. In first level reversals, which account for roughly 10 percent of all reversals are literal words that often detail a person's conscious thoughts. Second level reversals contain operational metaphors that describe complex behavior patterns and consist of 45 percentof all reversals. Third level reversals also account for 45 percent of total reversals and consists of archetypes having great impact on behavior. One of the most promising aspect of reverse speech is in the area of personal growth using a technique called metaphoric restructuring. The theory Mr. Oates proposes is that at the deepest levels of consciousness the mind thinks and organizes human behavior through a series of pictures and images, like an internal movie. These images are simply made audible in reverse speech. On this basis, if one were to change the picture of the movie, plot or metaphor, then it is possible that this can change the behavior or personality that the picture represented. Spiritual MysteriesWhat is even more fascinating is that reverse speech will communicate the condition of the soul and even spiritual mysteries. Mr. Oates adds that not a session goes by without the word "soul" coming up. The reversals will sometimes reveal one's mission in life. It talks about heaven and God and the interaction that that side of life has with us. Interestingly enough, reverse speech communicates by using mythical and cultural metaphors such as the Garden of Eden, the snake, Satan, Adam and Eve. Then what about reincarnation? Mr. Oates confides that reincarnationists would not like what he has to say about it. reverse speech does not confirm or deny reincarnation. What it does say in very strong terms is: Do not go there. Do not regress, do not explore. The reason is, according to Oates, is that this causes the metaphors or dysfunctions of the past to remain in the present. Mr. Oates reiterated,"You are not solving any problems at all by going back, even if you think you are. It's what's keeping our planet in chains." It's an extremely strong warning, from numerous person's reversals, whether or not they believe in reincarnation, or past life therapy. Oates believes that any time you go back to past lives, you are accessing the energy of that and bringing it to the present and that is stopping us from taking our next evolutionary step. In the case of channeling, Mr. Oates could only say that in the half a dozen or so cases he worked on, that very deep metaphors came up in these reversals. This, he conjectured, is the accessing of deep unconscious knowledge or even the akashic records that may appear within the form of real "entities." As for multiple personality disorder, Oates stated that entire dialogues between the person's alter personalities would go on in their reverse speech. This actually occurs to a certain extent in normal people as well, because we are all composed of parts in varying degrees. Mr. Oates believes that with the growing use of Reverse Speech Technology TM, it will force us to become a society of honest congruent people. After all, we need all the help we can get!
